General Notes:
F. M. "Toat" Walter was named by his grandfather, Henry Clay Dean, for Francis Marion Cockrell, his friend who served five terms as a U. S. Senator from Missouri. In addition to farming, "Toat" also taught school for several years, including a few terms at Dean, Iowa, the town named for his grandfather.
In 1935 "Toat" and Lula moved to a farm south of Fremont, Iowa from northeast Missouri. They returned to Putnam County, Missouri in 1941, farming on land near his ancestors' home until the fall of 1973, when failing health caused them to move back to Fremont, Iowa to be near their daughter.
Francis married Lula Ann "Lou" Locker, daughter of Judge J. S. Locker and Unknown, on 22 Feb 1908 in Lancaster, Missouri. (Lula Ann "Lou" Locker died on 27 May 1980 and was buried in Cedar Township Memorial Cemetery Fremont, Iowa.)
